The Supervised Asthma Medicine in School (SAMS) program began in 20 Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) elementary schools during the 2014-2015 academic year and will continue for the 2015-2016 academic year. This research is being done to test if children with asthma will have fewer asthma symptoms if they are monitored at school to make sure they take their inhaled steroid medication (ICS) every day and take the medication the right way.
The SAMS Program consists of:
- Asthma clinics and medications brought to the schools
- Supervision of daily controller medications by health office staff
- Delivery of the award-winning Open Airways for Schools asthma self-management curriculum
- Coordinated care with SAMS and community providers

Eligibility:
Children 5 years to 11 years of age who have been diagnosed with asthma and attend one of the participating TUSD schools may be eligible to join the study.
